During the summer
Rachel has been involved with the church King's Club and also the summer
Youth Club.
During the King's Club Rachel helped in the upstairs hall, spending the
week with a table of all girls aged between eight and ten. The
group was made up of girls from the church but mainly of those who
don't normally attend Hill Street.
Rachel commented, "It was great to have the
opportunity to chat with the girls and to get to know them better.
Going through the worksheets brought up the opportunity to talk about
things like the resurrection and what exactly this means. It made
me realize that there are kids out there who don't know the basics of
the Bible and how important it is that we as a church are involved in
outreach work like the King's Club."
Rachel was glad to be back helping out with
the King's Club this year having been away in Russia for the past two
summers, feeling it important to be involved with the work of her own
church. "We were
able to present the Gospel to the young people in a simple and straight
forward way and to spend time with them, getting to know them and
showing them God's love in a very practical way", said Rachel.
When asked what she felt was the best part
of the King's Club, Rachel was keen to state that for her, "It was great
to work with others in the church, both young and old (!?), getting to
know better people I don't often have the opportunity to chat with."
As well as the King's Club Rachel has also
been helping out with the Youth Club that has been running in 105 over
the summer on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. In fact it was very
much Rachel's vision to provide, for the local young people who live in
the houses around our church, a place to go during the summer evenings.
"Yeah, I felt it would be great to extend
the Youth Club throughout the summer. It's mainly the young people
from the surrounding area who attend", commented Rachel.
"It's great because we can maintain and
build upon the relationships that have been established during the
winter. About a group of twenty or so regularly come along to play
pool, drink coffee, play computer games and have a bit of fun."
Rachel has been busy already this summer but
is also planning to be involved with further outreach work, including 'glo',
which sees young people from churches within Lurgan involved in various
outreach activities in the Mourneview housing estate and also within the
community around our own church.
