It is college time again and I am
patiently waiting for the church placement where I will be assigned my
two year assistantship, which will start in June of this year. At the
moment I am combining my college studies with a non-church placement
at Prison Fellowship of University Street, Belfast. This placement
involves visiting Maghaberry prison and talking with prisoners in
their cells, as well as having Bible studies with ex- prisoners at
Prison Fellowship.
The whole experience of speaking to prisoners who have committed
various crimes was very daunting. Reading verses from Proverbs 6 v 17f
helped me understand that God hates sin and the top of the list was
pride. It has been a very humbling experience to discover that not
only is there a great respect for spiritual things but many prisoners
also want to talk about the gospel of Jesus Christ. For Christians in
prison, the Bible is precious. There is a profound dependence on God
and a day to day reality of as Paul urges the Church at Philippi to
‘know Him and power of His resurrection’.
The Bible study with ex-prisoners centres on living for God amidst
the many pressures of outside life, finding a church and Christian
friends, as well as getting a job. They need a God who is real and is
real in their daily lives. For them, the Bible studies are a lifeline
where they are able to discuss not only the various temptations they
face but the struggles of living in society after such a long period
in prison. Yet the overwhelming emotion is a new-found joy and peace
they experience and they speak openly and unashamedly of their Saviour.
Pray for the ongoing work of Prison Fellowship. It is a very tough
work with both men and women seeking to serve God with prisoners and
prisoner’s families.
Pray for the many prisoners who are coming to faith in Jesus
Christ. Pray for the Sunday services and the different Bible studies
through the week. Pray for the Christians as they seek to influence
others for the Gospel.
Pray for the volunteers who enter the prison and speak with men,
women and young offenders. It has been truly amazing to see how God
has been working in the prisons and many from both sides of the divide
are not only interested in spiritual things but want to know more
about the Lord.
Pray for Union Theological College, the staff and students. Pray
for the ministry students, deaconesses and overseas students.
Pray for Kenneth Nelson and Marlene as they come to a very critical
time of transition from college life to full time ministry.
In conclusion, I would like to thank Hill Street Church for all
your prayers, encouragement and support to myself and the family. We
have been truly overwhelmed and much humbled by your love and
thoughtfulness.
